लिव-इन संबंधों के रजिस्ट्रेशन की व्यवस्था बनाने और उसे अनिवार्य रूप से लागू करने की मांग सुप्रीम कोर्ट से की गई है. याचिका में श्रद्धा वॉलकर और निक्की यादव हत्याकांड का हवाला दिया गया है.याचिका में कह गया है कि गोपनीय तरीके से चल रहे ऐसे संबंध लगातार जघन्य अपराध की वजह बन रहे हैं. लिव इन पार्टनर्स की सुरक्षा के लिए उनके संबंध की जानकारी पुलिस के पास होना ज़रूरी है. सुप्रीम कोर्ट की वकील ममता रानी की याचिका में लिव इन में रह रहे लोगों की संख्या की जानकारी जुटाने की भी मांग की गई है. याचिका में कहा गया है कि कोर्ट केंद्र सरकार को इसका निर्देश दे. याचिकाकर्ता की दलील है कि इस संख्या की जानकारी भी तभी मिल सकेगी जब लिव इन रिलेशन का रजिस्ट्रेशन अनिवार्य किया जाएगा. याचिकाकर्ता ने श्रद्धा और निक्की हत्याकांड जैसे कई मामलों का हवाला दिया है.याचिका में यह भी कहा गया है कि सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने कई आदेशों में खतरे का सामना कर रहे लिव इन रिलेशन में रह रहे लोगों को सुरक्षा दी है. इस तरह के संबंधों को मौलिक अधिकारों के दायरे में माना है लेकिन अभी ऐसे संबंधों के रजिस्ट्रेशन की कोई व्यवस्था नहीं है.
