अफगानिस्तान में मंगलवार तड़के भूकंप के झटके महसूस किये गए. भूकंप का केंद्र फैजाबाद रहा है. रिक्टर स्केल पर भूकंप की तीव्रता 4.3 रही. नेशनल सेंटर फॉर सीस्मोलॉजी की रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक भूकंप अफगानिस्तान में भारतीय समयानुसार सुबह 3 बजकर 23 मिनट पर आया था. भूकंप अफगानिस्तान में मंगलवार सुबह 120 किलोमीटर की गहराई में आया. इसका केंद्र फैजाबाद से 116 किलोमीटर दक्षिण-पूर्व में था पृथ्वी के अंदर का भाग अलग-अलग प्लेटों से मिलकर बना हुआ है. इन्हें टेक्टोनिक प्लेट कहा जाता है. पृथ्वी के अंदर कुल ऐसी 7 प्लेटें हैं. इनमें से हर प्लेट की मोटाई लगभग 100 किलोमीटर होती है. अक्सर ये प्लेटें खिसकती रहती हैं और पास की प्लेटों से घर्षण होता है. कभी-कभी ये घर्षण इतना बढ़ जाता है कि एक प्लेट दूसरी के ऊपर चढ़ जाती है, जिससे सतह पर हलचल महसूस होती है. वैसे आमतौर पर 5 से कम तीव्रता वाले भूकंप कम नुकसान पहुंचाने वाले होते हैं. वहीं 5 या उससे ज्यादा की तीव्रता वाले भूकंप में जान-माल का भारी नुकसान हो सकता है.
